Ohio gets regional ambulance for obese patients

The new unit includes a ramp and pulley system, and a cot that can hold up to 1,600 pounds

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Fire received a new bariatric ambulance equipped with tools needed to lift and transport patients more than 400 pounds.

The unit includes a ramp and pulley system, and a larger cot that can hold up to 1,600 pounds, ABC reports.

It was purchased with the help of a grant from the Central Ohio Trauma System. Crews at the scene will determine if the specialized unit is necessary, and will then ask dispatchers to send it out with additional personnel.

The unit will also be available to other fire departments across Central Ohio.
