Ky. medics receive new monitors thanks to $25K grant

FORT THOMAS, Ky. — Paramedics in the city are carrying two new gym bag-size life-sign monitors and defibrillators with them when called for life threatening emergencies including heart attacks.

The new devices are the most complex and costly pieces of equipment paramedics need to do their job, said Lt. Jeff Parker, EMS officer for the Fort Thomas Fire Department.

“We’re taking in the ER, what they do in the first half hour,” Parker said.The most important part of the technology is still defibrillation, but instead of delivering electric shocks to the chest with pads now uses a safer push-button system, he said. Training in underway; the new monitors will may be in service by Thursday, Sept. 19, Parker said.
