Grant Details: The fire department assistance grant is an interagency, cooperative program, administered by the Division of Forestry, Fire & State Land (FFSL), to provide financial assistance to Utah's fire departments. Funding can be used for wildland or structural fire training, prevention, personal protective equipment and basic suppression equipment. This grant is made up of three different sources of funding; two federal and one state; Rural Fire Assistance (RFA) from the Department of the Interior, Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) from the U.S. Forest Service and funds through the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy (UFRA) made available by the Utah Fire Marshal Office through the Fire Prevention Board. These funding sources have been blended into a single program in an attempt to simplify the process for Utah's fire department. Requests for funds are reviewed and ranked by a committee made up of representative from the contributing agencies (BLM, USFS, UFRA), rural and metro fire departments, the Fire Marshals Office and FFSL. All Grant awards require a match from the recipient. Matching portions can be provided in the form of a dollar amount or in-kind services. In-kind matching allows smaller, rural departments with little or no budgets to maximize grant funds. VFA money is a 50/50 match. RFA & UFRA money are a 90/10 match.
