State Highway Safety Grant Programs

Description:

In 1966, Congress enacted the Highway Safety Act, establishing the 402 State and Community Highway Safety Grant program, charging the states and U.S. Territories with implementation. Each Governor designates a Governor's Highway Safety Representative to administer the program. Congress has revised the program a number of times, adding new incentive grants, penalties and sanctions. State laws can impact the amount and type of funding that states receive for different programs.
