Florida Highway Safety Grant Program

Description: 

Overview:

The Highway Safety Grant Program, located in the Florida Department of Transportation Safety Office, provides seed funding to solve traffic safety problems from educational and enforcement approaches. Topics addressed include alcohol, seat belts and child-safety seats, police traffic services, speed and agressive driving, traffic records, motorcycle, roadway, community traffic, pedestrian and bicycle safety.

2. Speed Control

3. Alcohol

4. Motorcycle Safety

5. Traffic Records

6. Emergency Medical Services

7. Occupant Protection

8. Community Traffic Safety/ Safe Communities

9. Pededtrian and Bicycle Safety

10. Roadway Safety

Eligibilty:

State agencies, universites, units of local government and non-for-profit organizations.

Type of Assistance:

Funding for state and local programs. Also, some of the emphasis areas have resource centers which provide technical assistance publications and safety materials.

Available Funding:

The amount of funding varies by emphasis area and type of project.

Source of Funds:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and to a lesser extent the Federal Highway Administration.

Matching/ Other Requiements:

Since these grants are intended to be seed funding, local agencies are expected to pick up some of the program costs, especially for any personnel, in the second and third years of funding. New positions are funded 100 percent the first year 75 percent the second year and 50 percent the third year, and are expected to continue to be funded at the local level thereafter.

Application Process and Deadlines:

Concept papers are accepted from January 1- March 31 each year. A full application will be filled out for selected projects before the project begins. Projects run on the federal FY (October 1- September 30) and most projects can be funded for up to three years.
