Maine firefighters get emergency water tank with grant

By Tony Reaves
The Sun Journal

FRYEBURG, Maine — Thanks to a grant from Poland Spring, firefighters have a 10,000 underground water tank behind the East Fryeburg fire station.

According to a press release from Poland Spring, the tank was entirely paid for by a $30,000 Poland Spring Good Neighbor Grant.

Fire Chief Richard Sheaff said before the tank was installed, the department drew water from Elkins Brook, but variable water levels made it an unreliable source. He said fire trucks would have to travel five miles for water or rely on other towns' fire departments.

"Having a ready water supply from the fire suppression tank could mean the difference between saving a structure or not," Sheaff said.

He said there are two housing developments in East Fryeburg and no other access to water aside from the brook.

According to the release, the Good Neighbor Grant helps fund organizations involved in emergency relief, the environment, education, health and wellness, and local community needs.
