2011 AFG funding may be $390 million

Fire Apparatus & Emergency Equipment Magazine

Congressional subcommittees are $30 million apart on their proposals for funding next year's Assistance to Fire Grants Program (AFG) for fire department equipment purchases.

The House Appropriations Subcommittee for Homeland Security voted to fund AFG for fiscal 2011 at $420 million, a $30 million increase over fiscal 2010. The corresponding Senate subcommittee, however, decided to fund AFG at the same level as fiscal 2010, which is $390 million.

Both subcommittees voted to appropriate substantially more for AFG than the $310 million proposed by the president in his budget.

Fiscal 2011 funding for the federal SAFER Program, which supports the hiring of firefighters, was voted at $420 million by both the House and Senate subcommittees. That is the same level as fiscal 2010.

On July 15, the full Senate Appropriations Committee approved its subcommittee's proposals for AFG and SAFER fiscal 2011 funding. It was uncertain when the House Appropriations Committee would consider its subcommittee's recommendations.
