FY2010 AFG program details announced

By FireRescue1 Staff

WASHINGTON — Details of the application period for FY2010 Assistance to Firefighters Grants program were announced Monday.

The AFG awards will be distributed in phases and ultimately provide approximately $390 million to fire departments and nonaffiliated EMS organizations throughout the country.

Funding levels for the program this year have seen a decrease from 2009, when $565 million was appropriated for AFG, which could make the process more competitive for departments seeking assistance.

The application period began Monday morning and the deadline for FEMA to receive applications is Friday, May 28, at 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

This year's AFG remains largely unchanged from the previous year's program, according to the official guidance kit, based upon input from members of fire services and other stakeholders.

AFG awards are designed to enable local fire departments and EMS organizations to obtain training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehicles.

The program is administered by the Grants Program Directorate of FEMA in coordination with USFA.

Applicants who have questions regarding AFG should contact the help desk at 1-866-274-0960 or at firegrants@dhs.gov.
