Fireman's Fund grant updates Calif. firefighters' gear

MARIN, Calif. — Members of the Bolinas Volunteer Fire Department will be outfitted in the latest "turnout gear," thanks to a grant from Fireman's Fund Insurance Co.

Turnout gear is the protective, fire-resistant clothing firefighters wear when responding to fires and other emergencies.

Volunteers have had to make do with clothing that was old and ineffective because of budget constraints.

The $11,200 grant will buy eight sets of turnout gear that meet National Fire Protection Association standards.

"Turnout gear is crucial for protecting our firefighters and this money will enable us to replace the most worn pieces," Fire Chief Anita Brown said. "These new sets will last for several years and help protect us during countless emergencies."

The grant for new equipment comes from the company's Fireman's Fund Heritage program. Under it, employees may nominate a fire department for a grant.

Alan Gump, a company business analyst, nominated Bolinas Fire Department.

The grant was reviewed and awarded by a regional task force of employees and agents.

"Bolinas residents and those who visit the community are fortunate to have so many volunteers dedicated to protecting the area," Gump said. "It's critical we provide them with the best gear available so they're safe while working to help all of us."
