Firefighters continue to die from smoke inhalation in out-of-air emergencies. Despite advances in equipment and training, the numbers of reported cases of smoke inhalation continues to rise. The Last Chance Rescue Filter® is a self-rescue escape device that provides 15 minutes of respiratory protection to firefighters in the event of an SCBA out-of-air emergency situation. It adapts directly to the SCBA mask (Scott, MSA, Draeger, Sperian, ISI). This multi-layer filter protects against carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and the other deadly toxic gases commonly found in structural fires as well as particulates, allowing your body to use the ambient oxygen. This item is specifically for the firefighter whose only other option is to breath in an IDLH atmosphere. It is packaged in an air tight, moisture resistant barrier pouch, which is carried inside a custom black Nomex pouch. The LCRF has a 5-½ year shelf life. Essex PB&R also has available the washable, reusable Last Chance Trainer unit which is packaged in a re-sealable mock barrier pouch.

In a study of the Last Chance Rescue Filter on 13 firefighters from across the nation, Yale University School of Medicine concluded:

  • The emergency escape device provides excellent protection from CO in realistic fire scenarios with substantial exposure to toxic gases.
  • Ambient oxygen levels at the floor are adequate to sustain life, even during active fire conditions.
  • The firefighters studied had a positive impression of the device and its use.

Nothing is better than supplied air, but when things go wrong and the firefighter's only option is to breathe an IDLH atmosphere with no protection, we feel that having one last chance to go home is a safer option than certain injury or death. The LCRF could make the difference between a fatality and a close call.
